Vic Park Pride

Consultation has concluded

Gay pride or LGBTQI pride is about taking a positive stance against discrimination and violence towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

At the Town's Ordinary Council Meeting in August 2018, Council moved a motion to approve Town officers to undertake initiatives which celebrate, recognise and support an inclusive and connected community. In particular this motion relates to the equal rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) community, during Perth Pride month commencing November 2018, and to be held in subsequent Novembers in ongoing years.

This year the Town will be supporting the Know Your Community Pride in the Park event, painting the Town is rainbow colours, flying the flag at the Town's administration building, and will be engaging with the broad community during the month of pride to ask what you feel is the role and responsibility of the Town of Victoria Park in supporting our LGBTQI community.

What is happening now?

At the Community Development Committee held on 4 February 2019, the committee resolved to receive the evaluation report prepared by the Town.

As per the outcomes of the community engagement process, the Towns role in 2019/20 will be to support the LGBTQI community through raising awareness of equality and inclusion through advocacy, collaboration and capacity building initiatives, opposed to event delivery. The Town will continue to support community groups, including Know Your Community, through a partnership approach with a focus on building capacity and resilience.

  • Hi there, Does the Town of Vic Park have a dedicated LGBTIQ portfolio being managed by community officers? Thanks, Jess

At this stage, no. We will however shortly be recruiting a Cultural Inclusion Officer who will pick this up.
