Draft Parklets Policy & Guidelines

Consultation has concluded

In 2014, as part of a Council initiative to create a vibrant and strong main street, the Town instigated the Albany Highway Activation! (AHA!) project. As part of the AHA! Program, the Town funded and installed parklets along Albany Highway.

Parklets are micro parks that come in all shapes and sizes, providing a space free for use by the community. We have had parklets in our neighbourhoods for a while now, and although they have become a familiar feature within the Town, it’s time to think more carefully about how we manage and encourage them within our community.

Since the installation of the Town funded parklets along Albany Highway, the Town received requests from local businesses for approval to install parklets adjacent to their businesses. No such approval or assessment process currently exists to manage these requests.

What is happening now?

Community consultation is closed. Submissions received were reviewed by the project team and the document was updated. The final policy document is now being presented to Council for their endorsement.

  • I have recently found out that my cafe neighbour is applying for parklet approval which will occupy the car bay(s) directly in front of the cafe... What are the application guid lines and would they need permission from surrounding neighbouring business ? After all that 1 or 2 less car bays that could be used for potential customers in other business in the area?

    Hello!

As part of the application process anyone applying for a parklet or alfresclet is required to approach their neighbors and seek support. The Town will assess applications based on the feedback of neighbors in addition to assessing the general merit of the proposed parklet. The Town will consider any concerns raised and make an informed decision. This means that on occasion a parklet may be approved if a neighbor objects, if the objection is not valid or if it does not represent the majority opinion of the surrounding neighbors. The Town will always seek to best understand any objections made before making this decision.
