The future of leisure in the Town
Consultation has concluded
The Town has undertaken a review of our leisure centres - Aqualife and Leisurelife.
The provision of recreational services for the community's health and wellbeing is an important part of the Town’s purpose and vision. These services are heavily subsidised by ratepayers and so a review has been undertaken to ensure the centres operate in the most efficient way possible.

An independent consultant was employed by the Town to report on the commercial viability of Aqualife and Leisurelife. After conducting an assessment, which included consulting the community both online and through workshops, a report was produced with a range of recommendations designed to improve the financial sustainability of both centres.
This report was completed in December 2016, and the Town is now implementing some of the recommendations.
What's happening now?
There will be ongoing and future changes happening for the next few years so keep checking back to the Town's website for the most recent information.

We're looking for ideas on what the community is looking for and what you'd like to see when it comes to leisure, recreation and health and wellbeing in the Town of Victoria Park.
NickWJabout 7 years agoWhat about some broader health and wellness ideas that speak to the diverse cultural mix in Vic Park; Tai Chi and yoga for example.
Not everyone in Vic Park is likely to be attracted to "traditional" sport and gym offerings. There is also opportunity to partner with providers of these services, for a fee, and help support the financial sustainability of the centre. There may also be opportunities to cater for specific niche groups, such as the parents of immigrants, who would otherwise never go near the place, but might favour the use of cultural groups etc. State and Federal government finding may be available for this to avoid it being a cost for the Town.

The ideal situation is that learn to swim students become "life long swimmers", in order to achieve this the town should consider what happens after a student finishes learn to swim. My feeling is that they do other sports in preference to swimming. Aqualife should consider creating a pathway from LTS to other areas eg WaterPolo, Synchronized swimming or Competitive swimming. When the child grows up they see swimming as a fitness source and then continue to swim and then join a masters swimming club. Many of the sporting bodies are putting efforts into attracting young children such as the Junior Dolphins program, this program has Ian Thorpe promoting the sport and they provide a turnkey solution such as this: https://www.swimming.org.au/Junior-Dolphins/Information-For-Swim-Schools.aspx.
0Frehnejcabout 7 years agoModernize Aqualife 50m pool
Within 5 Km of the CBD there is only one indoor 50m pool that is at a standard for competitive swimming. This pool is located at HBF stadium in Claremont. Competitive swimming in WA has over 5000 members. In the 2015/16 year there was 15 pool competitions hosted by Swimming WA plus an additional number hosted by clubs. The indoor pool at Claremont is becoming difficult to book for the whole day due to the increase in demand. This can be seen as an opportunity for the Town to allow Swimming WA to host some competitions, however would need some investment in upgrading the starting blocks. The idea of commercial leasing of community spaces is short term. With the Town's population expected to double in according with government planning frameworks, there will be more demand for recreational services. Rates go towards community services and it is paramount that the Town puts local residents health and well being first.
