Local Planning Strategy

Consultation has concluded

The Local Planning Strategy provides a blueprint for the planning and development of neighbourhoods and commercial (activity) centres over the next 10 to 15 years and informs the preparation of a new Local Planning Scheme No.2.

The strategy provides for growth of the Town from 17,000 dwellings (2016 Census) to 35,000 dwellings by 2050 (+18,000 dwellings) to meet the State government's infill dwelling target under the Central Sub-Regional Planning Framework (WAPC, 2018). The strategy directs growth to the community's preferred areas for growth (in activity centres and around train stations) mapped during the 2016 Evolve Strategic Community Plan workshops, while continuing protection of the Town's valued character areas.

The strategy provides the framework for implementing the Town's other major strategies through a new Local Planning Scheme where required (eg. Urban Forest Strategy, Public Open Space Strategy).

What's happening now?

At the Ordinary Council meeting of 16 November, 2021, the Council deferred their consideration of the public submissions and final Strategy to allow for an additional briefing in February 2022.  The briefing has occurred and the final Strategy is being presented to the Council on 15 March 2022 for consideration.  Refer to the Town's Council minutes and agenda to see the final Strategy and report.

How can I find out more information?

  • Speak with the project officer listed under Who's Listening.

What are the next steps?

If the Council approve the final Strategy, it is then forwarded to the WA Planning Commission for their final approval.  The Town will begin implementing the actions of the final Strategy through the Vic Park Planning Program from 2022 onwards.
