The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is about organisations from every sector turning good intentions into real actions and rising to the challenge of reconciling Australia. A RAP is a framework that uses a holistic approach to create meaningful relationships, enhanced respect and promote sustainable opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The RAP program includes a series of frameworks, each offering a different level of engagement and support.
Developing and implementing a RAP allows the Town of Victoria Park (the Town) to focus on building relationships both internally and externally whilst raising awareness with our stakeholders to ensure there is a shared understanding and ownership of our RAP. Throughout the actions in the RAP, the Town has a strong focus on building the foundations for relationships, respect and opportunities, whilst focusing on building a positive internal culture and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, particularly Nyoongar cultures.
In 2013, the Town established an Aboriginal Engagement Strategy Group to build relationships and respect between other Australians and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This group informs and advises the Town on ways in which we can work together to identify opportunities that meet individual and shared aspirations, drive equality and build sustainability in our local community.
In partnership with the Town of Victoria Park and Reconciliation Australia, the Aboriginal Engagement Strategy Group embarked on the development of the first Reconciliation Action Plan.
The Town’s inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan was endorsed by Council in October 2018. A free community event to launch of the Reflect RAP was held on the Burswood foreshore on 12 December 2018 where more than 250 people joined in the celebration. The Town of Victoria Park Aboriginal Engagement Advisory Group will be working with Town staff to continue implementing the actions within the Reflect RAP over the next years.
