What is the Environment Plan 2023-2028?

    The Town of Victoria Park Environment Plan 2023-2028 will be the main strategic document directing environmental management by the Town over the next five years. The purpose of this plan is to identify environmental focus areas and associated actions that the Town will aim to implement.

    The draft Environment Plan 2023-2028 focus areas include:

    • Climate Change
    • Water Management
    • Land Use and Built Environment
    • Natural Areas and Biodiversity
    • Waste Management

    Each focus area is broken into:

    • Pressures
    • What have we done? (Previous activity and achievements)
    • Objectives and future actions

    Why has it been so long between the Environment Plan 2013-2018 and the Environment Plan 2023-2028?

    The Town acknowledges that significant time has passed since the close of the Environmental Plan 2013-2018 and the development of the Environment Plan 2023-2028.

    Reasons for the delay include:

    (a) A key informing document – the Strategic Community Plan – was under review, and a new iteration was developed. The Community Priorities of this needed to inform the focus areas of the Environment Plan 2023-2028;

    (b) It took time for the wealth of relevant feedback from stakeholders on the previous iteration of the initial draft to be digested and integrated;

    (c) Similarly, relevant frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the recent Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Nature-Positive approach needed to be integrated; and

    (d) Priority projects, such as developing and implementing the Climate Emergency Plan.

    How often will the Town review the new plan?

    The Environment Plan 2023-2028 is intended to be reviewed annually.

    What is the difference between the draft Environment Plan 2023-2028 and the Climate Emergency Plan?

    The Climate Emergency Plan aims to reduce the Town's organisational carbon emissions to zero by 2030. It focuses on carbon reduction and adaptation actions for Town facilities, assets and waste, and ways to support our community and businesses to reduce their own carbon emissions.

    The draft Environment Plan 2023-2028 links to climate change and the Climate Emergency Plan, but the focus is on a suite of other areas that require management in order to protect and enhance our natural environment, including:

    • Water Management
    • Land Use and Built Environment
    • Natural Areas and Biodiversity
    • Waste Management
