In 2018, the Town and in partnership with its community, developed and adopted its first Urban Forest Strategy. The aim of the strategy is to achieve a 20% tree canopy coverage, contribute to the health and well being of our community and a sustainable liveable city.
In order to achieve the six strategic outcomes in the strategy a draft Implementation Action Plan has been developed. The draft plan sets out actions and tasks that the Town and the community will undertake over the next five years.
What is happening now?
At the ordinary council meeting held on September 17 council endorsed the UFS Implementation Action Plan (UFS) allowing for transition from project to operational phase.
The recently created additional position of a Senior Place Leader (Urban Forest) will facilitate the delivery of the endorsed UFS Implementation Action plan. The creation of this role was foreshadowed within the endorsed UFS.
The month of October will see the Senior Place Leader (Urban Forest) work closely with the Transition to Implementation Working Group (TIWG) to start establishing the ongoing UFS working group and then subsequently for the Transition to Implementation Working Group (TIWG) to be dissolved. Consideration will being given as to the best approach to honouring and recognising the efforts and contribution that the Transition to Implementation Working Group (TIWG) has made to the UFS Implementation Action Plan and to the town.

That Council:
Endorses the Urban Forest Strategy (UFS) Implementation Action Plan.
Endorses the establishment of an ongoing UFS Implementation Working Group to guide the implementation and review of the plan.
Lists for consideration in the Long-Term Financial Plan an allocation of $1.0m per annum for the next four financial years (FY 20/21 to 23-24), with Council to consider funding in each year as part of the Annual Budget or by way of the budget review process.
